Sunday Stitching

Nothing much planned for today....which means a bit of extra time for some slow stitching and maybe a bit of sewing time.

A friend asked me if I would repair her beloved quilt that was made for her by her grandmother years ago.

It didn't need much....a replaced binding....

....plus, there was a huge worn out spot on the backing, so I appliqued a heart over it. The heart is about 8" across....that's how big the L-shaped tear was...

The fabric that I used for the applique is at least fifteen-years old and was a favourite designer of mine at the time....and I can't for the life of me remember her name! Does anyone out there know????....it's going to bug me until I remember.

It is always an honour to repair old quilts. It feels like the original sewist is looking over my shoulder quite pleased that her quilt has been so well-loved.

When I finished that this morning I took a few applique stitches in this month's Fun on the Farm block, which is the current online BOM from Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day.

It's been a long time since I've done a Dresden Plate block!

Today I am linking up with Kathy for Slow Sunday Stitching. It will be nice to visit with her to see what others are working on today.

  1. isn't it so nice that sometimes all an old quilt needs is a new binding and a piece of applique to cover up a worn area. I have done that too - sometimes I have found a seam or two that needs to be reinforced with a little stitching too.

  4. Is that maybe a Laura Ashley print? She did a lot of those soft 'sprig muslin' style floral fabrics back in the day.

  5. I too love the thought of the original sewist looking over your shoulder as you repair and stitch a well loved quilt. There is just something about old quilts that are filled with many lovely stories and memories. Loving your Dresden Plate. The fabrics ooze sunny and cheery colour and pattern.

  6. I agree I like thinking they are looking over our shoulder. I have a quilt I acquired from my husbands side of the family that needs a new binding and there was one fabric in the wedding ring that is worn so I need to find something similiar to applique over it. Your heart is perfect for mending the tear. Just think someone someday may discover your repair and know that you loved it enough to give is some tender loving care.

  8. So nice of you to repair that quilt and extend its usefulness. We live in a dispose and replace world. I like to repair rather than replace

  9. How about Kate Spain? It really makes me think of some 15-ish-yo fabrics from her that I loved. I know that looking-over-the-shoulder feeling. It's wonderful, isn't it? So very nice of you to revive this cherished quilt for your friend - things like this are quite special.
